What You Made: Jasper Sweater/Dress

A couple of amazing Jaspers have popped up in the last month, and I thought I’d share them with you. The amazing thing with creativity is that it takes every person in a different direction. I think a pattern only comes to its full potential when sewed up by other people than the designer. The makes below prove my point!

About to Make Our Pattern? Check Your Version Number!

One of the reasons I like a pattern in PDF form is that it is not a static product. A digital product can be altered even after people have bought it. Even though a pattern has gone through a thorough testing phase, there’s always things that can come up later. Sometimes it’s just a typo, other times it is the wording of an instruction step, sometimes it’s something in the pattern design. Different people notice different things – it cannot be avoided.

Fuel your Creativity by Organising your Stash – Part 2

Last week we talked about how having a large fabric and/or pattern stash can make us feel guilty and embarrassed. Moreover, if you lose track of what you have, your large stash is not creating opportunities but inhibiting your creativity. I listed steps for you to follow if you want to do something about this: eliminate temptation, catalogue your stash and catalogue your patterns. Check out the comment section too, there’s some great examples of how others catalogue their stash and patterns. If you have already started: yay you! If you haven’t and you’re waiting for the happy ending: that’s what we’ll talk about today. Now that you have easy acces to all of your fabrics and patterns, let’s make some sewing plans!

Fuel your Creativity by Organising your Stash – Part 1

Let’s talk about the size of our fabric stash today! I know – being honest about the amount of fabric and patterns you have might induce a certain amount of embarrassment and guilt. I seem to have an alter ego that takes over when looking at fabric. This other version of me has all the time in the world, the wildest ideas and never loses her mojo. Unfortunately this alter ego is not much connected with reality. I buy that fabric or pattern and then find that I have no time at all. Thus my stash accumulates and with it my guilt about purchases.

The Pattern Development Process

As a ‘new to the game’ indie designer I love reading from other designers about their process (most recently Marilla Walker’s). They make all the hard work behind a pattern visible and understandable. It has become clear that practically all Indie designers work their ass off for little pay, but for a lot of love, satisfaction and energy. For me it’s no different, and in this post I’d like to give you a peek behind the scenes and talk about what goes into my pattern creating process.

How to Match Stripes on Princess Seams

One of the Jasper product samples is made with a fun striped sweatshirt fleece. I had envisioned this one and was eager to bring it to life, but at the same time I didn’t look forward to matching the stripes on the princess seam bodice. In the end it wasn’t that hard, just a bit of extra prep work. If you want a stripy Jasper too, no need to fear! In this post I’ll show you how to match the stripes in the most important places.

Choosing Buttons for the Jasper Hood

Adding buttons to the Jasper hood is of course optional, but for me it just looks more finished with buttons. They are not functional, but they give the impression that the hood is wrapped around your head almost.

Different types and colours of buttons can completely change the style of your hoodie. Below are a couple of example. The big black ones make it bold, the white and checkered ones give it more of a 60’s looks, and so forth. I love the flower ones but they were a bit big for my taste – I wish I had bought the smaller version!
