Zircon: Recommended Fabric (+ Discount!)

Let’s zoom in on what fabrics are suitable for the Zircon Sweater/Dress.The recommended fabric section in the instructions lists sweater fleece, neoprene, fleece and quilted jersey. French terry’s, jacquard and interlock or double knits can also be suitable, but with these you definitely have to check the amount of stretch. My samples have been sewn with fabrics from The Sweet Mercerie, who is generously offering a 15% discount on all her French terry, neoprene and quilted fabrics! Use the code ‘ZIRCON ‘ at the checkout. I’m very excited to offer you this, Yvonne always has a great selection of hard to get fabrics like cool sweater fleece prints. Especially lucky for those in Europe because she’s based in Portugal.

Princess Seam Full Bust Adjustment Pt. 2

In the last post we’ve discussed how to check if you need a full bust adjustment and how much to add to the pattern. We’ve also demonstrated how a minimal FBA works in case you need to add 1″ or less. If you need more than that, you need to do a proper FBA and in this post we’ll guide you through that process. It seems like a lot of work when you look at the end result, but if you go step by step, it really isn’t that hard!

How To Make a Smaller Jasper Hood

The hood on the Jasper is big. This is an intentional design feature and it makes the hood different than standard sweatshirt hoods. It is not meant to envelop your head, but to rest on it lightly, not pulled all the way to the front. For those who would like the hood to be less big, today I’m showing how to make the hood smaller. We’ll make it more narrow at the sides, and make it sit more towards the back.

How Our Sizechart Works

In this post I’d like to give you some insight in how our size chart is built up, and how we came to this range of sizes. As you might know almost every indie pattern company creates its own sizechart. Every designer does his or her research on the subject, and then chooses the sizes/size proportions he or she thinks represent the average women best. I know, there is no such thing as an average woman, but you have to draft your patterns based on something, right?

Pattern Hack: Colour Blocked Onyx

Today I’ll show you how to adapt your Onyx pattern so you can make a colour blocked shirt. It’s a very simple adjustment since the cropped View B already provides us with a guideline for where to slash the pattern. I’ve made illustrations instead of photos because I still need to set up a space with good light. If you have any questions, let me know in the comments.

The Pattern Development Process

As a ‘new to the game’ indie designer I love reading from other designers about their process (most recently Marilla Walker’s). They make all the hard work behind a pattern visible and understandable. It has become clear that practically all Indie designers work their ass off for little pay, but for a lot of love, satisfaction and energy. For me it’s no different, and in this post I’d like to give you a peek behind the scenes and talk about what goes into my pattern creating process.
