New Pattern: the Onyx Shirt

I’m proud to announce that our third pattern, the Onyx Shirt, is now available in our shop at 15% off! I consider this one our take on the woven T-shirt. With its slightly boxy shape it’s the perfect breezy top for hot summer days. The Onyx shirt has clean lines and minimalistic details – perfect for showing off beautiful prints. In a plain fabric this shirt will quickly become an easy to combine summer wardrobe staple. View A is a T shirt with a high neckline, short sleeves and cuffs with an epaulet. View B is a sleeveless cropped tee with narrow waist darts and a high low hem.

View A has short sleeves with cuffs and epaulets. The cuffs are designed as separate pattern pieces to get a better fit with the sleeves. You know those T-shirts with rolled up cuffs that stand at a different angle than the sleeves? Those ‘wings’ are a pet peeve of mine, and it’s what you get when you roll up a tapered sleeve. The Onyx cuffs have a zig zag edge and thus fit their sleeve perfectly. Also, because they are separate pattern pieces they’re not exactly ‘real’ rolled up cuffs. They are attached wrong side to right side, so you see the right side of the cuff when they are folded up. If the sleeves and cuffs were one piece, you’d see the wrong side of the fabric on the outside of the cuff. The epaulets are decorative, the button is sewn on without a buttonhole.

View B is a sleeveless cropped tee with narrow darts and a high-low hem. I love the look of cropped tops, but I can’t help but feel a bit bare in them. The Onyx doesn’t feel that way to me though- the wide shoulders and the low back makes me feel more covered. Especially when wearing a high waisted skirt, there’s barely any skin showing. And if the weather isn’t that great I wear them with a top underneath.

What I find most exciting about this pattern is the options you have to customise the look you want. Take the bodice as a base – t-shirt or cropped – and add on to it what you like. Choose a high or low neckline, sleeves or sleeveless, you can even choose if you want the cuffs or not. These options make it so you can create totally different looks with just one pattern. The grey striped one above is the straight View A, the coral one the straight View B. The one with the jungle print has the length and sleeves of view A but without cuffs, and the neckline of View B.

  1. Congratulations – It’s lovely! I like how you played with the fabric direction on the grey version, and the cropped version is such a cool shape!

    1. Hi Barbara, the pattern goes up to a 49″ (124 cm) Bust and is drafted with a C cup. So it depends, maybe you’d have to do an FBA. I wrote a blogpost on how to do that.
